CHAPTER 4

Kendo Training Methods

Kihon Geiko

Many kendoka mistakenly assume that the continued practice of basic techniques is only for beginners. This is not the case. Because of the complexity of seme, timing, and opportunity required to make a successful strike in jigeiko, it is easy to let the quality of your technique and posture deteriorate if your training only concentrates on winning points.

Basic technique and movement should be practiced throughout your kendo career up to and including the senior dan ranks. This is particularly true for times when you are “facing a wall.” In this case it always pays to go back to basics.
